What gout feels like
Gout commonly causes sudden severe pain, swelling, warmth and redness in a joint, often the big toe, ankle or knee. Other joint problems can look similar.
Uric acid needs context
A single high uric-acid result does not by itself diagnose gout. Symptoms, examination, kidney function, medicines and sometimes joint-fluid testing help clarify the diagnosis.
During and between attacks
Acute attacks and long-term urate-lowering treatment have different goals. Long-term medicines should not be started, stopped or adjusted casually without a plan.
Lifestyle and associated risk
Hydration, weight management, moderation of alcohol and high-purine excess, and management of kidney disease, hypertension and metabolic risk can all be relevant.
